- The mountainous and forested, teardrop-shaped island of Phu Quoc lies in the Gulf of Thailand about 15 kilometers from Cambodia and 45 kilometers from Vietnam. About 70% of the island’s area is occupied by Phu Quoc National Park. Phu Quoc National Park lies on the northeastern tent of the island and the eastern border is the coast. It covers 31,422 hectares. The park has a combination of continental and coastal climate. The park is hilly, but the hills are not steep. Watercourses are mostly seasonal, they usually flow into the sea on the west side of the island. There is also a historic prison on the island. The French-built Phu Quoc prison was expanded during the American War and could house up to 40,000 Vietnamese political prisoners. After the Tet attack in 1968, the prison was full of captured soldiers. The prison was surrounded by a wire fence with a number of guard posts. Today, there are a few dilapidated corrugated houses and a small two-storey museum.
