Itineraries and travel plans for northern Vietnam.

Travel itinerary for Vietnam – a good way how to save a lot of time.

    • A lot of people prepare a travel itinerary wherever they go. If you have limited time and want to use it effectively, it is really useful. Northern Vietnam is a large part of the country and transport in some places is a little slow or tricky to arrange. On the basis of questions I have received, I’ve created 9 suitable travel itineraries with maps and routes with the various numbers of days spent. If you want to get to know northern Vietnam more intimately and want more things to see I recommend you rent or buy a motorbike.

BOOK A PRIVATE TOUR in Vietnam

If you want to get to know northern Vietnam take at least 3 weeks.

    • “I got a question”, somebody asked me “what is it possible to see in Vietnam in 2 days.” In 2 days! Yes I have had this question! From what I read and see, most people allow about 10-14 days for exploring northern Vietnam. Less commonly some people spend about 3-4 weeks on their trip. 3-4 weeks is a good time to explore this area and for planning an itinerary. I would say, in my opinion , allow 10 days as a minimum. At least a third of the time gets taken up by transportation and traveling. I think it doesn’t really make sense going along a main road, then sleeping on that same road and then just continuing the next day? Better to have the time to be able to stop at places and look around.

⚠️ Important information for planning your itinerary:

> generally allow time for 2 days in one place
> keep in mind, we all travel differently (some go quicker, some slower)
> some routes can be travelled in a shorter time (eg. if you stay one day in one place)
> most routes can be planned with bus travel , but also by motorcycle
> some routes are suitable only for traveling by motorcycle (especially in the far North)
> book and buy your bus, train, ferry tickets or flights at Baolau ➜ or 12go.asia ➜ (search and book tickets)

> book hotel, homestay or house online with Booking ➜ or Agoda ➜
> search and book international and cheap flights easily online with Cheapoair ➜
> Baolau – recommended in Lonely Planet, Vietnam Airlines, Tripadvisor, Gapyear
> sometimes you will need to ask about the local minibuses in town or in the hotel
> I recommend taking a reserve of petrol in a plastic bottle if you are on a motorcycle
> exceptions are the major routes from one place to another with a length of at least 100 km
> read here for information on transportation in Vietnam
> all routes begin in the capital of Vietnam – Hanoi
> Cat Ba island lies in Ha Long Bay (an alternative to Cat Ba IslandQuan Lan Island or Co To Island)

Legend on the map:

Bến xe – bus station, Bến phà – ferry / boat, Bến tàu – pier / boat dock, Ga – train station

If you want to see village life of ethnic minorities, fantastic mountains and valleys, it is necessary to rent a motorbike or scooter (unless you have a private mototaxi) for traveling in northern Vietnam outside the cities. It does not make sense to stay only in the cities, because there is almost nothing to see.
